How to Get a Degree in Education

A degree in education can help you get a job working in day care, as a teacher, administrator, counselor or educational policy maker. In addition to your studies, most education degrees also require that you spend some time doing student teaching inside of the classroom. Beyond studying pedagogical theory you will also learn things such as classroom management and curriculum design.

      Choose an education degree major. Some choices include science, mathematics, English, basic education, early childhood education, special education, physical education and elementary and high school education.

      Research universities. You can visit the US News and Education website (see resource link) to see a comparison of top education schools in the country. Compare each university's programs, tuition fees and choose a university you like and can qualify to enter.

      Prepare admission requirements for university that you have selected. Visit their website or admission office directly. Admission requirements will vary depending on type of degree for which you apply. If you are an international student, you have to take and pass the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). You will also need SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) scores for a bachelor's program and GRE (Graduate Record Exam) scores for a master's or doctoral program. If you are getting an associate's degree just need to enroll in community college of your choice.

      Submit the application form along with appropriate test scores, copy of high school or university transcripts and application essay. Generally, it takes six to nine months to find out if your application has been accepted or not.

      Sit down with guidance counselor or academic advisor once you have been accepted and select your coursework. Enroll for your courses.

      Attend your classes regularly and pass them. Complete any field teaching or internship work, and comply with all other program requirements in order to graduate. For a bachelor's degree, it will take an average of 4 years to complete. An associate's degree can be completed in 2 years, a master's degree will typically take 1 to 2 years and a doctorate will usually require 4 to 5 years.
