Enroll in a university that offers a Bachelor's degree in Special Education. Universities that do not have a specific Special Education degree will include it with a General Education degree and name Special Education as a discipline or emphasis.
Maintain good grades in classes for Education and Special Education. Aside from general college requirements, you will be required to take courses such as Diagnosis, Prescription and Assessment Techniques, Behavior Management, Methods of Teaching Math and Science and Child Development before earning your degree.
Participate in supervised teaching in a special needs classroom. According to the Bureau of Labor Science, the last year in a Special Education degree emphasis is spent in a classroom with a certified special education instructor. Here, you will learn hands-on experience in problem solving and teaching with special needs children.
Graduate once you have completed your coursework and classroom practice. You will need to graduate with at least a Bachelor's degree to become eligible for licensing, which allows you to work with special needs children in a classroom setting.
