Research each of the three universities to determine which might be an appropriate fit for you. Consider preferences such as campus size, student life, housing options, possible funding sources and cost when making a decision.
Register for and take the SAT or ACT. Select the colleges that you are interested in applying to when completing the section designating which colleges receive your results.
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), as well as any internal applications necessary to receive aid at your chosen colleges.
Apply for admission. At a minimum you will need to forward official transcripts from any schools you attended, or your GED test results, and pay any applicable application fees. Additionally, you may be required to submit letters of recommendation from individuals able to attest to your potential success in college. If you are interested in teaching history at the secondary level, indicate an interest in the secondary education major. If you are interested in teaching at the college level, a major in history will suffice.
Receive your letters of acceptance and make an enrollment decision. Submit any deposits required by the deadline indicated in your acceptance letter.
Meet with an academic adviser to map a chosen course of study. She will advise you on any classes you will need to meet your goals, any tests required for certification and any education you will need beyond the undergraduate level. Stay on course by meeting with your adviser each semester, enrolling in the appropriate classes, registering for certification tests or applying for graduate school in a timely fashion.
