Attend a university and achieve an undergraduate degree in a related field. The degree you pursue will vary depending on the school you attend, but if you plan on eventually entering a military history program, you should consider getting your undergraduate degree in history or political science.
Take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test and the GRE History subject test, which are required to apply to the Maryland graduate schools that offer degrees in military history. For more information on scheduling your GRE and GRE subject tests, visit the GRE website (see Resources).
Apply to a university in Maryland that offers a master's degree in military history (there are currently no universities in Maryland that offer undergraduate degrees in military history). The Maryland universities that offer a master's degree in military history are the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University. The F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University in Maryland offers a degree in military medical history. While the applications for these universities will vary slightly, in general you must submit an application for a master's degree in history and then indicate "military history" as your intended focus of study.
Attend the university to which you are admitted and complete all required courses. Courses might include Military Theory, U.S Military and History of Warfare, among others. The courses vary depending on the university and semester.
Pass your final examinations in all courses. Depending on your university of choice, the graduate program and in some cases your graduate adviser, you might have to write and defend a thesis on military history in addition to taking final examinations.
