Whether you're just exploring the possibility of a career in nursing or have already earned an undergraduate degree in the field, you may be interested to know that the United States Department of Labor projects employment of nurses to continue a 10-year growth rate of 22 percent through the year 2018, much higher than other professions. To ensure you've selected a reputable nursing school, check for the school's list of accreditations, usually found on its website. The path to accreditation shows the school's commitment to providing quality student education, resources and faculty.
  1. University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing

    • The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing offers many options for nursing students, including 18 master's degrees, accelerated bachelor of science in nursing programs and doctorate degrees. Classes include introduction to nursing, nursing care of the older adult, psychiatric mental health nursing, promoting healthy lifestyles and principles of human nutrition. Penn Nursing has differing requirements for its programs. Students seeking master's degrees must have an undergraduate degree in pre-nursing or a bachelor of science in nursing. Candidates interested in the bachelor's degree must have a high school diploma.

      While on campus, students may get involved in organizations such as Student Nurses at Penn, the Minority Nursing Organization and the Male Association of Nursing. The university has been awarded accreditation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

    University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill

    • Students just starting out in their nursing careers or continuing their education will find programs at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Nursing. Academic programs include bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees, plus coursework for registered nurses. Classes include introduction to physiology, introductory medical microbiology, fundamentals of human anatomy and physiology, general psychology and elementary pathogenic microbiology. Students seeking undergraduate degrees must also complete general core classes such as lifetime fitness, historical analysis, global issues and English. UNC offers a chapter of the Association of Nursing Students, Minority Student Association, Student Health Action Coalition and Sigma Theta Tau, the international nursing honor society.

      Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and a high school diploma for the bachelor's degree program or a bachelor's degree in nursing to enter the master's degree program. UNC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

    University of Maryland School of Nursing

    • Pursue your education in nursing at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, which offers a bachelor of science in nursing degree, plus master's and doctoral options. Students cover topics such as community health nursing, context of health care delivery, adult health nursing, gerontological nursing, nursing care of the childbearing family, pathopharmacology, introduction to professional nursing practice and mental health nursing. Each degree program requires a resume, statement of goals, letters of recommendation and a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

      The University of Maryland School of Nursing is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. UMD offers its students organizations such as Chi Eta Phi, the registered professional nurses' honor society, the Hispanic Association of Nursing Students, Sigma Theta Tau, the University of Maryland Association of Nursing Students and the Nursing Student Government Association.
