How to Get a Degree in Pharmacognosy

Pharmacognosy is known as the oldest branch within the profession of pharmacy. It is the study of drugs and pharmaceuticals as derived from natural products, such as plants and animals. The scope of knowledge covered in this profession ranges from the cultivation, selection and preservation of such drugs to the study of its physical origin, identification, use, preparation and commerce. Degrees in pharmacognosy are generally pursued by graduate or doctorate students. Requirements for a degree in Pharmacognosy will vary depending on the institution and educational program.

  1. Undergraduate Degree

      Obtain an undergraduate degree in a medical science field that will help you as a foundation for the study of pharmacognosy. Pharmacognosy degrees are not available at the undergraduate level. Graduate-level schools that offer pharmacognosy degrees require aspiring students to have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in areas such as pharmacy, chemistry, biology or organic chemistry.

      Complete the undergraduate degree in the related field with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher out of 4.0.

      Complete the TOEFL English competency test, if necessary (see Resources). This test is required for foreign students for whom English is not the primary language. Obtain TOEFL score of 550 or higher for the paper-based test, and a score of 213 or higher for the computer-based test.

    Graduate Degree

      Search for schools that offer graduate programs on pharmacognosy, such as the University of Illinois, University of Mississippi or University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

      Contact the school's career services department or the College of Pharmacy within the university for more information on specific requirements, admissions process and deadlines for the submission of application.

      Search for available scholarships or grants in the field of pharmacognosy, if necessary (see Resources).

      Obtain all required material needed to apply for admission for the graduate program you are interested in. This material generally consists of the application form, official transcripts from the undergraduate program, three letters of recommendation, competency tests if applicable and an admission essay or personal written statement detailing your professional goals.
