New students to the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program are initially put in to the pre-clinical section. You’ll be required to meet certain standards provided in their handbook before you can advance to the clinical phase. The entire program lasts two years. As of April 2010, New York state doesn’t require licensure for their occupational therapy assistants. So technically you don’t have to sit in on the exam from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy. However it would benefit you in the job market if you did take the exam.
