Colleges in Colorado With an Associate's Degree in Outdoor Recreation Programs

Outdoor recreation professionals make the great outdoors their office. Getting an education in outdoor recreation affords students tangible skills to take into their future jobs. Colorado has several community colleges offering an associate degree pertaining to outdoor recreation.

    • Red Rocks Community College is a two-year school with campuses in Lakewood and Arvada. The college awards an associate of arts degree in outdoor physical recreation. The degree program lends itself to a career as an outdoor educator or wilderness guide, and is also recommended for students who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree in outdoor recreation. Curriculum focuses on the use of safe and environmentally friendly outdoor skills. Courses in the program include beginning golf, mountain biking and introduction to fly fishing.

    Colorado Mountain College

    • Colorado Mountain College is a two-year college located between Denver and Grand Junction. The college offers a program in outdoor recreation leadership that emphasizes wilderness skills and leadership abilities. Topics of study in the program include safe and efficient travel, group development and decision making. Mountain orientation and avalanche safety are among the other courses offered. Students are required to complete a minimum of 62 credits to graduate from the program. Credits can to transfer to many four-year institutions.

    Pikes Peak Community College

    • Pikes Peak Community College is a public two-year college in central Colorado offering an associate of applied science degree in outdoor leadership and recreation technology. Completion of the program requires both general education and major-specific coursework. Classes include risk management for outdoor professionals, backcountry cooking and principles of outdoor recreation. Nordic skiing and whitewater rafting guide are among the elective course topics available. Pikes Peak Community College also offers outdoor recreation certifications, including mountain field studies and water recreation studies.
