Associate Degree Programs in Parks & Recreation

There are more than 50 associate degree programs in parks and recreation in the United States. The majority of these programs are offered on-campus at junior colleges or community colleges. Parks and recreation, or leisure management, is a sought-after degree and can be utilized in the fields of law enforcement, park management, park administration and park interpretation.
  1. Barton County Community College

    • There are approximately 4,000 students enrolled each year at Barton County Community College. The associate degree in park management and conservation provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to manage, ranger or administrate local, state and national parks. Students can participate in self improvement classes, developmental courses and career exploration. Classes are available online or on-campus.

    Broward Community College

    • Broward County Community College, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is a large community college with over 31,000 students enrolled each year. To obtain an associate degree in parks and recreation management, a student would take classes in the recreation technology program which is offered on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus. Studying in this program leads to an associate degree in science, and then a career in the parks and recreation management field.

    Iowa Lakes Community College

    • With more than 3,000 students, Iowa Lakes Community College, located in Estherville, Iowa, offers students a program in preparation for a career in parks and recreation. The associate degree program develops skills and knowledge for the student to successfully manage park facilities, indoor recreation leisure facilities, outdoor recreation leisure facilities and law enforcement. This program also educates students in marketing, business etiquette, health and safety issues and public relations skills.

    Madison Area Technical College

    • There are 16,000 to 20,000 students enrolled at the Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wisconsin, every year. Once a student has taken all the required basic community college courses at Madison Area Technical College, the student will be required to take such relevant courses as Recreation Administration and Management, Recreational Activities, Facility Operation Maintenance, Psychology of Human Relations and Recreation CPR. An internship practicum is encouraged during the fourth semester of the two-year program.

    Spokane Community College

    • Spokane Community College had an 84 percent employment rate for students who completed the program in the 2007 to 2008 school year. The campus itself spans across more than 12,000 square feet of nature in Spokane, Washington, including 148 acres by the Spokane River. Students wishing to obtain an associate degree in parks, recreation and leisure facilities management will be a part of the school’s natural resources program and will choose one of four areas of concentration: soils, wildlife and fisheries, parks and recreation or forestry.
