Spelman College Degree Programs

Spelman College is a historically black women's college in Atlanta, Georgia. The school, which is over 120 years old, offers a number of pursuits for students interested in high education. Over 2,000 students seek out bachelor's degrees in a variety of disciplines at the liberal arts, private institution of high learning.
  1. Admissions

    • Applications to Spelman College are many, so be certain to apply early.

      Spelman College is a competitive institution, as its considered to not only be a premier Historically Black College, it ranks in the top tier of liberal arts colleges. Students wishing to attend the school should apply as early as possible. The Early Decision option exists, requiring an admission packet's receipt by November 1. Students pursuing this option agree to pursue attendance at no other school, and enroll at Spelman by Dec. 15. Early Action or Early Notification, is similar, as applications must be submitted by November 15. This option allows for a student to be admitted by December 31, but is not as restrictive as the ED option. Students wishing to apply for Regular Admission must do so by Feb. 1 or Nov. 1, depending on whether Fall or Spring admission is desired.

      The college admits less than 40% of its applicants, though applicants are many. Most students have undertaking a healthy amount of study in the basic subjects of Math, Science, English and History during their high school career. Some may have also pursued advanced studies. Spelman's application requires a package consisting of high school transcripts, SAT or ACT scores, as well as two recommendations.

    Popular Majors

    • Economics is one of the most popular degree options at Spelman College.

      Most students seeking a Spelman College degree, largely do so in applying to the arts disciplines in English, Political Science, Economics, Psychology departments, as well as the science discipline of Biology-which are the most popular. The departments have an honors division, generally requiring a GPA of 3.2. or more, with the exception of Biology, which requires a GPA of 3.0. There are also various GPA requirements in the major itself for honors designation. The school also offers various research opportunities in the math and science disciplines.

    Additional Programs

    • Students of Spanish may spend part of their summer in the Dominican Republic, as part of a study abroad option.

      Spelman College offers 30 major degree options, including various programs with an international focus. African Diaspora & The World, Japanese Studies, as well as World Languages & Literature, are among the majors at Spelman offering a world view. Studies in French, in addition to Spanish are also available as degree options. Courses in Chinese are also an option. There are a number of study abroad opportunities offered as well, in order to supplement the classroom teachings and offer first-hand interaction.
