A number of universities are members of the GEM Consortium, including University of California, Berkeley, Northwestern University, Louisiana State University, MIT and Tuskegee University.
Members of minority groups who have an interest in foreign affairs/public service may be interested in the Thomas R. Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship. The fellowship is for talented college seniors who are applying to two-year master's degree programs in disciplines such as economics, political science or foreign languages. The Fellowship prepares students for careers in the U.S. Department of State as foreign service officers. 2010 fellowship recipients can receive up to $50,000 for each of their two years of graduate study, to be used toward tuition, fees, books and living expenses. Fellows also participate in one domestic and one overseas summer internship. The Pickering Graduate Fellowship is funded by the U.S. Department of State and candidates must complete a minimum three-year commitment in the foreign service upon graduation.
The Special Libraries Association (SLA) administers the Affirmative Action scholarship program for minorities pursuing master's degrees in library science or information science. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and members of an underrepresented minority group. They should have a demonstrated interest in librarianship, as well as demonstrate financial need.
