Pre-Med Scholarships for Minorities

Scholarships are available to help minority students offset the high cost of pre-medicine studies and other expenses during medical school. Some groups considered as minorities are American-Indians, Latinos, African-Americans and Alaska Natives. Students must meet the guidelines and criteria to be considered for the funds. All students applying for these scholarships must be preparing for or actively pursing a pre-medicine degree.
  1. Indian Health Services

    • Indian Health Services have scholarships for state- or federally-recognized American Indians and Alaska Natives. Students must enroll or be enrolled in pre-medicine courses that will ultimately lead to a bachelor's degree to be considered for the awards. Submit proof of citizenship, a tribal or faculty recommendation letter and a statement of your career goals, why you want the scholarship and how you plan to serve the Indian community after graduation. Awards are paid over a ten-month school year for up to four years, eight years for part-time students. Applications are available and may be submitted on the Indian Health Services website, www.scholarship.ihs.gov/

    Student National Medical Association

    • Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is the oldest student run organization by African Americans and has opened its doors to serve other minorities of color. It offers 10 Kaplan scholarships in the amount of $1000 each with a goal of increasing the number of African Americans and other people of color completing medical school. Consideration for the awards is based on membership in the association, participation in association sponsored events, letters of recommendation from a chapter president, a chapter advisor or a regional director, resumes, academic transcripts and financial transcripts. Applications and all documents--except transcripts--should be emailed to [email protected]. Financial and academic transcripts must be mailed to SNMA Scholarships.
