Students who apply for admission to Texas Tech are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships when they submit their applications. Therefore, no additional application is needed. The President's Platinum, President's Gold and President's Silver and National Merit Scholars are the available scholarships offered based on academic excellence. The yearly award amounts vary between $10,000 and $60,000. All awards require full-time enrollment and a minimum grade-point average for renewal. The Platinum award requires 1,400 SAT or 32 ACT and top 10 percent of high school class for consideration. The Gold award requires 1,300 SAT or 29 ACT and top 10 percent of class for consideration, and the Silver requires 1,250 SAT or 28 ACT and top 10 percent of class. National Merit finalists must select Texas Tech as their first choice to qualify.
Institutional competitive scholarships are awarded by individual departments, colleges or the financial aid office. These scholarships are offered to all students and take in account financial need and academic merit. Check with individual departments for application procedures. The President's Freshman Diamond, President's Transfer Diamond and President's Freshman Ruby Scholarships are competitive scholarships, with awards from $1,000 to $3,000 per year. They can be renewed with a minimum GPA and course load. The Freshman Diamond award requires a 1,400 SAT or 32 ACT, and the freshman Ruby requires a 1,300 SAT or top 25 percent of class.
Out-of-state students who receive competitive or merit-based scholarships that total over $1,000 per year may qualify to pay in-state tuition rates.
Graduate students are also able to apply for scholarships through the graduate school or individual academic departments. The school offers over 330 scholarships, from $2,000 to $4,000 each year. To be considered, students must apply directly with the graduate school. Applicants are considered on a variety of factors, including financial need, merit and residency status.
