A $1,000 award is given to graduates of BC secondary schools who demonstrate excellent achievement in fine arts, applied skills, physical activity or second languages. You can apply for this scholarship through your local District Scholarship Committee.
Two scholarships fall under this program: one for $1,000 and one for $2,500. To qualify for the $1,000 scholarship, you must finish your 12th grade English or French class with a "B" and achieve at least 86% on three of your 12th grade provincial exams. Students who qualify for the $1,000 scholarship and whose percentage score ranks them among the top 20 scholarship students are eligible for the $2,500 scholarship. School administrators must report students' exam results to the BC Ministry of Education for students to be considered for these scholarships.
Students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades can earn yearly vouchers that can later be redeemed toward post-secondary tuition. Vouchers for 10th and 11th grades have a value of $250 and vouchers for 12th grade have a value of $500. Vouchers are granted based on students' academic results as well as on non-academic components including work habits, community involvement and good citizenship. Vouchers are awarded by individual secondary schools.
These scholarships are from a combined fund supported by the government of BC and an original endowment of $15 million from philanthropist Irving K. Barber.
