The Hispanic Higher Education Scholarship Fund was created in 2002 by the New Jersey Mental Health Institute to bring awareness to the lack of English and Spanish speaking mental health professionals working in the state of New Jersey. "Providing funds for Hispanic students to pursue a graduate degree in social work is a long-term strategy to directly address the desperate shortage of qualified bilingual and bicultural mental health professionals who can address the mental needs of New Jersey's growing Hispanic community," stated NJMHI executive director, Debra Wentz, Ph.D. The amount of money granted for this award varies from year to year, based solely on the total amount available after fundraising activities. This scholarship is granted to a bilingual Hispanic student with a baccalaureate degree who wishes to pursue a master's degree in social work.
