Minority-Based Scholarships in New Jersey

New Jersey, also known as "the garden state," is located on the eastern seaboard and is home to a diverse population of more than eight million residents. To help all of its students become university graduates, many organizations in New Jersey offer generous college scholarships to create a new generation of leaders, thinkers and achievers who will shape the state's future.
  1. Thornton Sisters Foundation Scholarship

    • Young women of color in New Jersey who are in their senior year of high school can apply for a scholarship from the Thornton Sisters Foundation. The award requires applicants to have been accepted into an accredited four year college and to have a minimum C+ average and financial need. Award amounts vary depending on available funds and can be used toward tuition or other educational expenses. If a scholarship recipient does not complete college, she must repay the full amount of the award.

    Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey

    • Since 2003, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey has awarded over $400,000 to Latino students in New Jersey. The awards are presented in payments of $1,000 per semester over four years, for a total of $8,000, to support recipients throughout their undergraduate education. Eligible applicants will be Hispanic residents of New Jersey planning to attend an accredited public or private college in the state, who have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and who plan to major in a business-related field.

    Hope Chest Scholarship Foundation

    • Talented minority scholars in New Jersey can apply for a scholarship from the Hope Chest Scholarship Foundation to help them attend college or trade school as full-time students. Award amounts vary and are presented based on academic accomplishments and financial need. Applicants must have a high school diploma with a minimum 2.5 GPA or a GED; community college students transferring to a four-year institution are also eligible to apply.

    Bernadine Johnson Marshall--Martha Belle Scholarship

    • To encourage African American women to enter the legal profession, the Association of Black Women Lawyers of New Jersey offers the Bernadine Johnson Marshall--Martha Belle Scholarship, worth $2,500 to $5,000. Applicants must be New Jersey residents in their in their first, second or third year of law school. Additionally, applicants must have demonstrable financial need and have a record of community service.
