Scholarships for Minorities in Washington State

Minority students in the state of Washington have multiple opportunities to pursue scholarship funding. There are scholarship programs for African Americans, American Indians and Hispanic/Latino students. These programs seek to encourage diversity at colleges and universities in Washington while reducing some of the financial burden of paying for college.
  1. Future Teachers of Color Promise Scholarship

    • The Future Teachers of Color Promise Scholarship is available to minority students who are pursuing teaching degrees at Western Washington University. The $1,500 scholarship is available to students entering their sophomore or junior years who have a minimum 2.75 GPA and a desire to commit themselves to a career in teaching at the preschool, elementary, middle and high school levels. Recipients are required to participate in seminars and mentoring exercises hosted by the education department faculty.

    American Indian Endowed Scholarship

    • The American Indian Endowed Scholarship Program provides scholarships to Washington State students who have social or cultural ties to an American Indian tribe or community in Washington. Applicants must be enrolled or planning to enroll at an eligible Washington college or university and have plans to serve the American Indian community in some way after graduation. The $1,500 awards are granted based on academic merit and financial need.

    Future Cougars of Color Scholarship Program

    • The Future Cougars of Color Scholarship Program is available to minority students residing in Washington state who have been admitted to Washington State University but have not yet enrolled. The program allows students to earn scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 by attending an open house event at the university. Students must be invited to the open house event and attend all sessions to be considered for the awards.

    Blacks at Microsoft Scholarship Program

    • The Blacks at Microsoft Scholarship program is open to high school seniors of African descent in Washington state. The program awards $5,000 scholarships to students who plan to pursue degrees in engineering, computer science, business or related fields. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, financial need, leadership and community service and interest in a career in the technology sector. Scholarships may be renewed for four years for a total of $20,000.
