School Grants for Descendants of Cherokee Indians

Grants and other forms of financial aid for school attendance are readily available for descendants of Cherokee Indians, as well as other American Indians, including Native Alaskans and Native Hawaiians. Begin a search for funding at your public or college library; substantial up-to-date information is available on scholarship and grant opportunities in the reference section.
  1. Cherokee Nation Scholarship Program

    • The Cherokee Nation Scholarship Program offers two types of scholarships to all citizens of the Cherokee Nation. The Cherokee Nation PELL Scholarships are available for undergraduates who meet the federal PELL Scholarship requirements. Available funding is divided equally among all eligible students who complete the PELL application; the grant is awarded for up to eight semesters. The Cherokee Nation Scholarship Program is available to all citizens of the Cherokee Nation who do not qualify for a federal PELL grant and who do not choose to attend Haskell Indian Nation University; the scholarship is awarded up to eight semesters and is $1,000 per semester. Applications for both programs are due in June of each year.

    American Indian Community College Scholarship

    • The American Indian Community College Scholarship is open to high school seniors throughout the United States who plan to attend community college. Applicants must be enrolled members in a federally recognized tribal organization. As many as 100 students are awarded up to $5,000 each year. Selection is based on the combination of a 1,000-word essay, high school GPA, SAT or ACT scores, involvement in the American Indian community and financial need. Applications are due in September for the spring semester and February for the fall semester. Write to request an application.

    American Indian Education Foundation

    • Students of Cherokee descent are eligible to apply to the American Indian Education Foundation Scholarship Program. The program is open to those enrolled full-time in a 2-year college, a 4-year college or university or a vocational/ technical school. The application includes an essay component, and financial need is considered. More than 100 scholarships of $2,000 are granted each year. Applications are due every April.
