Visit the AMVETS website and the AFSA websites (see Resources below) to find out about scholarships available to children whose parents were in the Air Force.
The AMVETS scholarship is available to a student who has a grade point average of at least 3.0, demonstrates financial need and has a parent who has been honorably discharged from the Air Force.
The AFSA scholarship is based on academic record, character, writing ability and leadership skills. This scholarship is available for children of Air Force and National Guard Veterans.
Visit the Coast Guard Foundation website (see Resources below) for information about scholarships for children of Coast Guard Veterans. This foundation offers a variety of scholarships for these children based on academic achievement, leadership abilities, character and good citizenship.
Visit the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation (see Resources below) to find out about scholarships for the children of Marines. Special consideration is given to children who had a parent killed or wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan. The child must have a GPA of at least 2.0 and the family must have a gross adjusted income of no more than $65,000 to be eligible.
Visit the American Legion Legacy Scholarship to find out about information on scholarships for children of veterans from every branch of the military. This program is for children of veterans who were killed after 2001.
Talk to your commanding officer if you are still active in the military. Ask about scholarships that are available to your children based on which branch of the military you are in. There may be special scholarships available for those who have parents that have served on special projects.
Register with the Thanks USA Scholarship program (see Resources below). You can register at their website to receive information about scholarships that you or your child might qualify for based on information you provide about military experience, financial need and academic success.
