Non Merit Based Scholarships

For many families, sending a child to college requires a serious financial investment, which includes obtaining federal or personal loans that can take decades to repay. Scholarships become one of the ideal ways to help cut the costs of tuition. While most scholarships require applicants to have above-average academic records, many give preference to financial need or race or ethnicity over merit.
  1. American Dream Scholarship Program

    • The Sallie Mae Fund and the United Negro College Fund together offer the American Dream Scholarships to African-American students who demonstrate a financial need for tuition assistance. The program awards recipients with scholarships that range between $500 and $5,000. Though students must have at least a 2.5 grade point average, the program gives preference to students who meet the requirements for a federal Pell grant, which demonstrates financial need. Only undergraduate students who study at a 4-year college or university are eligible for the scholarship.
