This scholarship was created by Cecil Rhodes in 1903. According to scholarships.com, Rhodes "dreamed of improving the world through the diffusion of leaders motivated to serve their contemporaries." Each year, this program aims to send 32 U.S. students to study at the University of Oxford for two years. Some students are eligible to stay for a third year at Oxford. The Rhodes Trustees cover all college expenses like tuition, laboratory costs and matriculation. Additionally. the Rhodes Trustees cover any costs of travel to and from Oxford and issue grants for research. Applicants for this scholarship are required to be U.S. citizens between the ages of 18 and 23.
To attain this scholarship, an applicant must fill out a preliminary application and a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, meet the entrance standards of and plan to attend an accredited university, be a U.S. citizen and be a female high school senior. Although this scholarship is issued by a golf foundation, the applicant's golf skill is not a factor in the selection process. However, applicants must have some type of involvement in the sport. The criteria are academic excellence, character and financial need. The amount awarded to scholarship winners is $2,000 yearly for up to four years. The award renews each school year as long as the student maintains a 3.0 GPA and the scholarship must be applied toward expenses like tuition and room and board.
According to nationalmerit.org, "the National Achievement Scholarship Program is an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding Black American high school students." There are several things that a student must do before participating in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. The PSAT has to be taken no later than the third year of high school. Applicants must mark Section 14 of the PSAT answer sheet to indicate that the student is a black American. The student must be either a citizen of the United States or a U.S. lawful permanent resident. Also, applicants must plan to matriculate no later than the fall following high school graduation. The award goes out to about 800 students each year. Finalists of the scholarships are awarded either the $2,500 National Achievement Scholarship or the corporate-sponsored Achievement Scholarship.
