The American Baptist Home Mission Societies makes scholarship money available to students pursuing a doctorate in theology through its doctorate grant program. This one-time award is for $3,000. In order to be eligible, a student must be a United States citizen, in attendance at an accredited school in either the United States or Puerto Rico, and active in an American Baptist church for a minimum of one year. Furthermore, doctorate candidates must have completed one year of study at the doctorate level, and must also plan to teach at a college or seminary. The annual deadline for application is May 29. The Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, a society of Freemasons, offers one award for which a doctoral candidate in theology is eligible. According to the Supreme Council website, the Shepherd Scholarship is awarded to any student pursuing a degree in "fields associated with service to country and generally perceived as benefiting the human race." In order to be eligible, students must also be attending school in the United States. The scholarship is awarded in the amount of $1500 per year for up to four years.
