The American Society for Microbiology offers fellowships to United States doctoral candidates of minority ethnicity. The program provides an annual stipend of $21,000 for up to three years. Students must be African American, Native American, Pacific Islander, Hispanic, or an Alaskan Native in order to be eligible. Students must have already successfully completed the first year of their graduate program in order to qualify, must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, and must be a student member of the ASM. The annual deadline is May 1, as of June 2010.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute provides funds to support PhD candidates in microbiology and other areas related to biomedical research through the Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study. Gilliam Fellowships provide an annual stipend of $30,000, and support a PhD candidate for up to five years. According to the HHMI website, candidates will be evaluated on both their record of academic achievement as well as their commitment to promoting diversity. The annual application deadline is October 19, as of June 2010.

The Institute of Food Technologists provides scholarship money to students pursuing graduate degrees in microbiology through IFT Food Microbiology Division Graduate Scholarships. Two scholarships are awarded annually in the amount of $2,000. Students must be a member of the IFT Food Microbiology Division in order to be eligible, and must submit an essay expressing their interest in food microbiology. Students must carry a GPA of at least 3.0 in order to qualify for this scholarship.
