Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship Program

• As its name suggests, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/ACLS Early Career Fellowship Program aids PhD students in completing their doctoral dissertations. The scholarship, valid for one full year, comes with a $25,000 stipend, while also covering university fees of up to $5,000 and research fees of up to $3,000. Applicants must be in the humanities and social sciences and in their final year of writing their doctoral dissertations. As of 2010, the Foundation awards 65 fellowships each year. All requirements for the PhD except the dissertation must be complete at the time of application.

Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) Program

• The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) Program helps students in the early part of their PhD. The funding, meant to go towards pre-dissertation research, targets students pursuing interdisciplinary studies in the humanities and social sciences. The program consists of two four-day-long summer workshops meant to aid students in their research and in formulating their dissertation proposals. Accepted students can apply for funds of up to $5,000 to support their research projects. The program is typically only offered to second and third year PhD students, though exceptions occasionally will be made.

The Udall Foundation Environmental Public Policy and Conflict Resolution Dissertation Fellowship

• PhD students who are focusing their research on U.S. environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution can apply for the Udall Foundation Environmental Public Policy and Conflict Resolution Dissertation Fellowship. The Udall Foundation rewards two students each year with grants of up to $24,000. Students should already be entering their final year of writing their dissertation. The scholarship covers both your academic expenses and your living expenses for the period of one full year. The scholarship is open to U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents and U.S. nationals.
