Scholarships for Black Female Students

Scholarships are often awarded to financially disadvantaged students based on certain civic and academic achievements. In addition, some scholarships are provided to specific ethnicities and genders.There are several organizations that provide scholarships for black female students seeking help to pay for college tuition and textbooks.
  1. National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs

    • The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs provides scholarships for black female students looking to complete degrees in business, journalism or economic studies. The scholarships are provided every year, and award amounts vary depending on available scholarship funds. Eligible candidates are selected based on community service, essays, GPA and extracurricular activities. Scholarships are open to high school seniors and women over 35. The deadline for all applications is March 1st of each year.

    Ed Bradley/Ken Kashiwahara Scholarships for Minorities in Communications

    • The Ed Bradley/Ken Kashiwahara Scholarships for Minorities in Communication are awarded to black female students enrolled in college and studying journalism or communications. The scholarship program is sponsored by the Radio Television Digital News Association. The award provides financial aid for minority students to complete their last year of college and graduate with an undergraduate degree. Candidates must be full-time college students (freshmen are excluded). The Ed Bradley scholarship awards $10,000 annually, and the Ken Kashiwahara awards $2,500 annually. The application deadline is May 1st.

    The United Negro College Fund

    • The United Negro College Fund has for decades helped thousands of minority students receive a college education nationwide. The fund awards dozens of college scholarships to black female students each year. These scholarships help cover the cost of tuition, textbooks and room and board. Sponsoring over 20 scholarship programs, application requirements and award amounts vary. Interested candidates should contact the fund via phone or their website.

    Black Women In Sisterhood For Action Scholarship

    • For 29 years, Black Women In Sisterhood For Action, or BISA, has awarded scholarships to young black female students in inner-city communities. Candidates must be high school seniors who demonstrate a financial need. The candidate must show her potential to excel in college, provide examples of her leadership skills and discuss her future career goals. The scholarship awards $1,000 each tuition year as well as tutoring, books, counseling, transportation, and mentoring for both parents and students. In addition, monthly contact with a BISA member and networking opportunities in the community are provided. As of 2010, BISA has helped more than 89 black women graduate college.

    Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Award Program

    • Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Award Program gives scholarships to 15 young African American women between the ages of 12 and 18 each year. Eligible candidates must be nominated through a 750-word essay written by an adult. The essay must discuss how the nominee strives to be financially independent and provide examples of her financial and entrepreneurial skills and potential. In addition, students must submit a 250-word essay that shows how they positively affect their community, peers and school. The winning girls will be chosen based on how their essays demonstrate the attributes relating to the scholarship program's theme. Every year, prizes totaling $30,000 are awarded to black females. The deadline for applications is February of each year.
