The National Society of Black Engineers is an excellent resource for students preparing themselves financially for their engineering studies. The group offers two scholarships for black engineers, including the International Studies Scholarship of $500. The merit-based scholarship is offered only to undergraduate or graduate student members of the society with a 3.2 grade point average. Students may use the money to help pay for studying engineering abroad.

The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering also offers scholarships for black engineers. Their At-Large Scholars Program awards scholarships to students based on academic merit, financial need, community service and leadership ability. Scholarship money, as of 2010, is distributed based on grade point average, with $2,500 for a GPA up to 2.99, $3,000 for a GPA up to 3.49, and $4,000 for a GPA up to a 4.0.

Some corporations offer scholarships available to black engineering students. The Xerox Minority Scholarship is available to minority students pursuing a career in engineering. Students must complete an application, submit financial paperwork, and file a resume. Awards range, as of 2010, from $1,000 to $10,000.

Post, Buckley, Schuh & Jernigan, Inc., an engineering and architecture firm, also offers a scholarship for black engineering students called the Minority Engineering Scholarship Program For Black Students. Students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with at least 60 credit hours of engineering studies completed with a minimum 2.5 grade point average. The scholarship, worth $4,000 as of 2010, is only available to students with demonstrated financial need, and letters of recommendation are required.

The Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology provides scholarships to black engineering students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Scholarship awards as of 2010 are up to $2,000 per year for four years. Applicants are evaluated based on academic merit, financial need and an essay response. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be enrolled in school full-time in order to qualify.

The Helen T. Carr Fellowship of up to $10,000 as of 2010 is awarded to students pursuing a doctoral degree at a Historically Black Engineering College. The fellowship, which is a partner effort with the American Society for Engineering Education, stipulates that recipients commit to returning one day to a Historically Black Engineering College to teach. Applicants must be sponsored by a Dean of Engineering at their university of attendance.
