Scholarships for Independent Black Students

Thanks to the generosity of corporations, schools, nonprofit organizations, charities and private donors, finding ways to pay for school has never been easier. Several scholarships and grants are available for independent, African-American college students. Scholarships can be for specific fields of study, be need-based or merit-based, or be general scholarships for traditional, average students. The United Negro College Fund is a helpful resource for black students.
  1. Castle Rock Foundation Scholarship

    • The Castle Rock Foundation Scholarship is by the Castle Rock Foundation in partnership with the United Negro College Fund. To qualify, students must have a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, be African-American and be majoring in business or engineering at one of the historic black colleges and universities. The award amount is $3,600.

    Ahmanson Foundation Scholarship

    • The Ahmanson Foundation offers the Ahmanson Foundation Scholarship in partnership with the United Negro College Fund. To qualify, you must be African-American, have a GPA of 2.5 or above on a 4.0 scale and reside and attend a college or university in Los Angeles, California. The award amount is between $2,000-$5,000.

    Alberto-Culver Texas Scholarship

    • The Alberto-Culver Texas Scholarship from the United Negro College Fund, is for Texas students. To qualify, you must have a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, be African-American and attend one of the following schools: Jarvis Christian College, Wiley College, Texas College, Huston-Tillotson University or Paul Quinn College. The award amount is between $1,000-$5,000.

    Alliance Data Scholarship

    • The Alliance Data Scholarship is open to deserving students by the United Negro College Fund in partnership with Alliance Data. To qualify, you must be a minority, attend school in the Dallas, Texas Metropolitan Area, demonstrate financial need and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The award amount is $5,000.

    American Honda Foundation Scholarship

    • The Honda Foundation offers the American Honda Foundation Scholarship in partnership with the United Negro College Fund. To qualify, you must have a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, be majoring in science, mathematics, information technology or environmental science and attend Dillard College, Xavier University or Tougaloo College. The award amount is between $1,000-$5,000.
