Scholarships for College Students With Disabilities

Student disabilities can include those that are physical or mental. Physical disabilities include blindness, deafness or being confined to a wheelchair. Mental disabilities include learning disabilities and mental retardation. A disability does not have to stop someone from getting a formal education. In fact, there are many scholarships available to provide financial support for these students.
  1. National Federation of the Blind Scholarship

    • The National Federation of the Blind offers more than 30 scholarships annually to legally blind students that attend its July national convention. Applicants must be legally blind in both eyes, be a full-time college student in a degree program or a part-time student working full-time (one of these awards is given) and participate in the entire July convention as well as scholarship activities. In addition to scholarship funds, students also receive assistance to attend the next year's convention.

The scholarship is provided for high school seniors and college freshman from any state for any college or university. The student must demonstrate financial need, be under the age of 21, maintain a B average and have participated in community service. The number and amount of these awards change, but they are merit-based and very competitive. In 2009, there were 20 scholarships awarded between $1,000 and $10,000 and there were 348 applicants.
