The Ford Foundation provides fellowships to PhD students in a variety of disciplines, including chemistry, who demonstrate a commitment to teach and undertake research at the college level upon attainment of their doctoral degree. Students must be citizens or nationals of the United States and must be attending a U.S. institution in order to be eligible. Preference is given to members of underrepresented ethnic groups, such as African Americans, Native Americans and those of Hispanic origin. The National GEM Consortium provides scholarship funds to doctoral candidates in various branches of science through its PhD Science Fellowship Program. GEM Science Fellowships pay for all of a student's tuition and academic fees throughout their PhD program in addition to annual stipends of at least $14,000. In order to be eligible, candidates must be African-American, Native American, or of Hispanic origin as well as a citizen or permanent resident of the United States that have a 3.0 GPA with the intention to attend a school that participates in the GEM program. The National Science Foundation provides funds to students enrolled in research-based PhD programs under the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program. NSF Graduate Research Fellowships provide annual stipends of $30,000 for up to three years, and provide an additional $10,500 to cover a student's tuition. In order to be eligible, a student must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States and must have completed less than 12 months of post-baccalaureate study. Prospective applicants are judged on the basis of academic record, letters of recommendation, and a proposed plan of research.
