Scholarships for a PhD in Mathematics

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, there were 2,900 mathematicians and 54,800 postsecondary math teachers in 2008. Mathematicians must have a Ph.D., unless they work for the federal government. There is an increasing need for these professionals, as employment is expected to grow by 22 percent between 2008 and 2018. The average salary of a mathematician is $93,580 a year, with the highest paid in the field earning up to $142,460 a year. Doctoral degree students and working professionals in math have opportunities through fellowships, "assistantships," scholarships and other awards to have their full tuition paid for and additional funding for research.
