Scholarships for a PhD in English

Pursuing a Ph.D. in English requires a flair for language, the ability to organize one's time effectively, and funding. Many candidates have possessed the first two but sadly lacked the third. Of course, there are no shortcuts, but there are a few key resources that every aspiring scholar ought to know about.
  1. The Ford Foundation

    • This nonprofit organization offers pre-doctoral, dissertation, and post-doctoral fellowships in a variety of field and disciplines, including literature. Applicants must be enrolled in a full-time program leading to a Ph.D. Stipends are $21,000 for one year of research.

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation

    • This institution offers a grant called the Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship, which is directed toward helping Ph.D. candidates in the humanities complete their dissertations. Every year as many as twenty candidates are awarded grants of up to $25,000 for one year of research.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/ACLS Early Career Fellowship Program

    • This program offers a Dissertation Completion Fellowship, which includes a one-year, $25,000 stipend plus up to $8,000 in research fees and tuition waivers. Up to 65 grants are awarded each year.
