Scholarships for Veterinary Technologists & Technicians

To qualify for a license to work as a veterinary technologist or technician, students must receive a minimum of an associate degree in most states, reports the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. During the 2009 to 2010 school year, the average cost for one year at a two-year public college program in the United States was $2,544, according to CollegeBoard.com. To help veterinary technologists and technicians afford the cost of higher education, a number of scholarships are available.
  1. Oxbow Exotic Animal Interest Scholarship

    • Sponsored by Oxbow Animal Health company, a manufacturer of food for exotic rodent pets, the Oxbow Exotic Animal Interest Scholarship presents two $500 scholarships to veterinary technicians each year. Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in working with exotic animals like reptiles, snakes, or fur-bearing mammals like chinchillas and prairie dogs. To qualify, applicants must write a 300 to 500 word essay describing their career goals and their interest in working with exotic animals. Also required is a professional resume, a current college transcript and a letter of recommendation. Applications are available online and are typically due in May of each year. Oxbow pays the scholarship directly to the winners' schools in September.

American Kennel Club Veterinary Technician Student Scholarship

    • Each year, the American Kennel Club partners with Bayer K9 Advantix and the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America to grant scholarships to veterinary technology students. The number of awards given each year varies, but the total amount of the awards divided between the winners is $25,000. To be eligible, applicants must be members of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians, which requires an annual fee. A one-page essay is also necessary and must detail the applicant's education, work and research experience and interests. Applicants must be full-time students and need to submit their recent transcripts. The applications are available on both the American Kennel Club and National Association of Veterinary Technician websites. The deadline for applications is usually in April.

    Sue Busch Memorial Award

    • A non-profit organization, the Pet Care trust grants an annual scholarship in memory of Sue J. Busch, the former president of H.H. Backer Associates Inc., which publishes Pet Age magazine. The scholarship is given each year to students entering their final year of schooling. Rather than having an open enrollment, any college or school in the United States or Canada can submit nominations from among their students to the Sue Busch Memorial Award. To win, a student must have demonstrated interest in providing companion animals to the elderly or patients with disabilities. Three students from among those nominated receive a $500 scholarship.
