Scholarships for Veterinary Technicians

Education is neither easy nor cheap. Scholarships can help allay the cost of higher education in every field, and veterinary technology is no exception. There are three distinct scholarship funds aimed at helping offset the costs of training for veterinary technicians.
  1. K-9 Advantix

    • Full-time students of veterinary technology studying at a school accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association are eligible to apply for the Bayer K-9 Advantix and American Kennel Club scholarship. The scholarship, set up in conjunction with the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, awards 25 applicants each with a $1,000 scholarship as of the 2010-2011 school year. Applicants must be members of NAVTA as a student or fully certified member. The K-9 Advantix and AKC Scholarship requires students to send copies of their transcripts and NAVTA membership card, an essay on a topic chosen by judges, and a completed application. Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement as well as the student's involvement with NAVTA-related activities. Applications and relevant paperwork are due each April.

    Oxbow Animal Health

    • Each year the pet food maker Oxbow Animal Health provides $500 to two students in the field of veterinary technology. The awards are reserved for students with an interest or specialty in exotic animals such as reptiles, amphibians or small mammals. To be considered for the funds, students must complete a scholarship application and provide a letter of reference. Proof of enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technician training program is also required. In addition, students must submit a transcript showing their current grade point average. To show dedication to exotic animal health, Oxbow requires applicants to write an essay describing their interest and experience with such animals. Applications are due in April. Scholarship winners are announced in May.

    Laurie Page-Peck Scholarship

    • Veterinary technology students with an interest in zoo medicine can apply for the Laurie Page-Peck Scholarship, set up by the Association of Zoo Veterinary Technicians. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to students who develop a paper for presentation and publication at the association's annual conference. Students must also complete an application. Abstracts of the papers are accepted or declined in March. First drafts of accepted papers are due in April, with final drafts due in June. Scholarship winners are announced no later than 30 days before the annual conference, which is usually held in October or November.
