The American Psychological Association, or APA, provides scholarship support to students pursuing a career as a substance abuse therapist through its Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Predoctoral Fellowship. This program provides financial support for up to three years, and must be reapplied for annually. To be eligible, a student must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, and must be pursuing a Ph.D. in an APA accredited program. Preference will be given to ethnic minorities, though all students are encouraged to apply. Students are not eligible for support during their internship year. The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, or AAMT, provides scholarship support for prospective substance abuse therapists through its Minority Fellowship Program. This program provides a $20,000 annual stipend to cover all the costs of attending a doctoral program, as well as a $1,500 travel stipend to attend the AAMFT Annual Conference. This program supports a student for up to three years. To be eligible, a student must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, and must be enrolled as a full-time student in a marriage and family therapy Ph.D. program. Students who specialize in providing substance abuse therapy to minority and underserved populations will be given preference, as well as applicants who belong to an ethnic minority. The Women's Independence Scholarship Program, or WISP, provides scholarship money to students pursuing a career as a substance abuse therapist who plan to work at a domestic violence service agency. Awards of up to $3,000 are made annually to defray the costs of tuition, fees and books. To be eligible, a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. Interested students should visit the WISP website to download an electronic application.
