Graduate Courses in Substance Abuse

Students pursuing a graduate program in substance abuse take courses that cover a variety of areas. Opportunities are available for students to learn about treatment and prevention, addiction, effects on family members and counseling methods. In addtion to academic coursework, students also must complete an internship in a professional setting and under the supervision of a licensed counselor.
  1. Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Addiction

    • Students learning about the treatment of alcohol and drug addiction focus on topics involving the psychology, sociology and physiology effects of alcohol and drugs. Courses on this topic teach students how clients can develop defense mechanisms when avoiding drugs and alcohol. Opportunities are also available to learn about the basic treatment issues, such as relapse, behavior and social groups.

    Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Abuse

    • Courses within a graduate program in substance abuse also teach students about the prevention of alcohol and drug use. Students learn to implement strategies that can help prevent clients from abusing alcohol and drugs. Additional focus is placed on encouraging a healthier individual and coordinating community programs.

    Substance Abuse Counseling

    • Opportunities within a substance abuse program also provide students with a chance to learn about substance abuse counseling. Students develop the critical skills necessary to work with groups, and topics cover self-awareness, providing support among members, observational methods in groups, group therapy approaches and leading therapy group.

    Theories of Chemical Dependency

    • In order to understand the factors involved in substance abuse, students need to learn about the theories involved in chemical dependency. Students learn about the effects that drugs and alcohol have on the brain and nervous systems. Topics also cover the basic pharmacology involved in drugs, alcohol and addiction.

    Internship

    • Obtaining professional experience is also part of the curriculum within a graduate program in substance abuse. This is an opportunity for students to learn how to work with clients under the supervision of professional substance abuse counselor. Internships may take place in detoxification centers, outpatient centers, hospital programs and recovery homes.
