Shire ADHD Adult Scholarships

Shire, a global specialty biopharmaceutical company, currently sponsors a scholarship at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, Georgia. According to Matt Cabry of Shire, the biopharmaceutical company funds the "Daily Successes with ADHD" scholarship through a contribution, although the scholarship program is administered by SCAD. The scholarship's purpose is to aid adult students who suffer with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
  1. History

    • In July 2008, Shire announced that it will sponsor the "Daily Successes with ADHD" scholarship at SCAD-Atlanta. The unveiling of the scholarship coincided with the launch of Shire's new medication Vyvanse, which is a treatment for adults with ADHD. Celebrity designer Ty Pennington, who suffers with ADHD, traveled to his hometown of Atlanta to both announce the scholarship and promote Vyvanse. Pennington began taking Vyvanse as part of his ADHD treatment.

    Purpose

    • Shire contributed $10,000 to fund the scholarship. According to Shire's official press release, the purpose of the scholarship is "to recognize achievements and to motivate a student to continue to focus and achieve daily successes." Although ADHD can afflict both children and adults, the disorder can affect the two groups differently. For adults, ADHD symptoms can impact various facets of their lives, from their careers to their personal relationships.

    Eligibilty

    • To be eligible for the "Daily Successes with ADHD" scholarship, adults with ADHD must be enrolled in or applying to a graduate program at SCAD-Atlanta. Applicants must verify that they have this disorder by providing a letter from their physician. Along with the letter, applicants need to write and submit a 500-word essay about how their lives are affected by ADHD from day to day. Those who are awarded this scholarship may encounter situations in which they need to openly acknowledge and discuss their experiences with ADHD; applicants must provide written consent stating they are willing to participate in interviews for various media outlets.
