Programs for Students With Autism

There are numerous educational programs designed for people with autism. From specialized preschools to college programs created to work around autism-related difficulties, they take into consideration and adapt to the needs of the student. As the number of children with autism continues to climb, these programs are becoming more common and easier to find.
  1. The Gersh Experience at Daemen College

    • Daemen College is a private college that has partnered with The Gersh Experience to offer a secondary education program uniquely designed to meet the needs of young adults with autism and other special needs. Each student's program is customized to meet his or her unique needs. The college-level courses are fully accredited, enabling students to earn a bachelor's degree in the area of their choosing.

    Mobility International USA Foreign Exchange Program

    • While many might assume that a person with autism would be unable to participate in a foreign exchange program, the cross-cultural learning that occurs such a program can be highly beneficial to people suffering from disabilities. Mobility International USA is an organization that makes foreign travel possible for individuals with autism and other disabilities. MIUSA programs typically last between two and four weeks. While staying with a homestay family, participants attend leadership seminars, participate in disability rights workshops, do teambuilding activities.

    Art and Music Therapy

    • People with autism frequently have musical or artistic talent just waiting to be tapped. As art therapy is increasing in popularity, programs and credentialed art therapists are becoming easier to find. While just playing can be fun, a good therapist will set treatment objectives and goals. You can find a therapist through the Art Therapy Credentials Board at atcb.org.

      The Boston Conservatory Autism Project is a unique project developed through a partnership between the Autism Higher Education Foundation and the Boston Conservatory. This project was created for the purpose of cultivating innate abilities in musically gifted individuals with autism. The program allows up to 24 students with an autism spectrum disorder the opportunity to take individualized weekly music lessons at the Boston Conservatory.
