Residential Special Education Schools

Special education covers a variety of needs. Children with emotional, developmental or behavioral disorders, or with physical or learning disabilities, may need special education. Although most special education students go to classes at public or private schools during the day and return to their homes in the afternoon, some students need the extra structure of learning at a residential facility.
  1. Melmark School

    • Melmark School has residential programs for students between the ages of five and 21 who have medical conditions or learning disabilities, such as autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation or acquired brain injury. The school offers individualized learning plans and recreational activities, including a recreation center, playgrounds, a covered riding area and indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

Melmark has two campuses, one in Pennsylvania and one in Massachusetts, and accepts students from all over the United States and abroad. Students can be admitted throughout the year, and admission depends on the residential options needed and availability. The school is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children and the Autism Society of America.
