Lindamood-Bell® LiPS® is a phonics-based program that focuses on the movement of the mouth and its relation to sounds and symbols. Each sound is introduced with its "brother" sound, the sound that makes a similar movement of the mouth. Consonants are introduced first, and vowels later. Reading, blending and spelling are the focus and clinicians teach through Socratic questioning whenever feasible. The student then learns how to hear slight changes in sounds by looking at the mouth and feeling throat vibrations. Finally, the student is introduced to reading and spelling multisyllabic words by using the strategies and vocabulary he's become familiar with during earlier sessions.
Orton-Gillingham is another research-based, multisensory, systematic phonics program. Sounds are introduced one at a time instead of two at a time. When a student learns a new sound, he practices spelling, reading and writing with that letter and sound in the same session. Kinesthetic strategies such as drawing in sand or rice and tracing the letter in the air are a daily part of the curriculum. The student is introduced to syllable patterns after becoming familiar with one-syllable words, and is then taught how to use syllable patterns to break down multisyllabic words.
Literacy Links is a systematic and phonics-based program. Sounds are introduced in groups and grouped together based on the shape of the mouth when making the sound. Oftentimes the student will learn many sounds and spellings in one session. Consonants and vowels are taught simultaneously. The focus is not on spelling the words, but rather decoding and reading single-syllable and multisyllabic words. Literacy Links is a program that can be completed in as little as three weeks, whereas the other two programs usually take much longer.
