Lexia Reading provides intensive reading instruction and is now available to home-schoolers as of October 2009 through the Family Literacy Centers, Inc. Lexia Reading provides interactive, computer-based learning for ages four through adult. The software automatically places students at their individual level through an initial placement test and allows parents to monitor progress with reports. Three different versions allow student placement of any range and skill level, the option of Spanish directions allows ESL learners quick access to learning, and independent work ensures student mastery of concepts.
The Lindamood-Bell Centers teach reading instruction through the use of the LiPS program--now home-schoolers can use the same material in their own homes for a fraction of the cost. LiPS requires a material kit and a teacher's manual, and though it is more involved than other programs, it has a successful record with dyslexic children and those with other learning disorders. Instead of beginning phonics instruction with the assumption that the student has phonemic awareness, this program begins by teaching phonemic awareness by focusing on the oral-motor movements which make each sound and how these differ from one another.
The comprehensive language arts program Writing Road to Reading uses the Spalding Method to teach reading, writing and spelling skills to children in grades K through 6. This program provides a multisensory approach to learning language, increasing knowledge and retention for a widely diverse student population including those with issues such as dyslexia. This is a well-known and respected program among public, private and home educators and is used worldwide. Many parents home-school their children using this method as described in the book, "Writing Road to Reading" by Romalda Spalding. Parents can also take the two-part course offered by Spalding Education International, a nonprofit organization created by Romalda Spalding to teach and certify parents, teachers and tutors in the Spalding Method.
