Home School Physical Fitness Programs

Physical fitness is an important part of school curriculum for children. Just as children in public or private schools have access to regularly scheduled physical education classes, children who are home schooled also benefit from structured physical fitness programs. Parents of home-schooled children can choose from several types of physical fitness programs to use as a part of a daily education schedule.
  1. NASPE Recommendations

    • The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) has a teacher toolbox on its Web site that provides useful information and ideas on implementing physical education into a child's life. Each month, the teacher toolbox features a list of new activities, complete with instructions for participants and parents administering the activities. Activities are provided for a full range of ages, from kids of elementary-school age to those in secondary education. Activities include dances, relay races, scavenger hunts and family activities. The NASPE is also a helpful resource in recognizing the nation's health observances, such as National Turn Off the TV Week and Family Health and Fitness Day - both during the month of September.

    DVDs

    • Just as adults have access to an abundance of fitness DVDs, kids can take part in the same types

      of activities by using the increasing number of fitness DVDs available for children. These DVDs allow children to participate in aerobics, yoga, dance and more. Some DVDs go beyond movement activities to teach children how to care for their bodies by drinking plenty of water, eating healthy and taking vitamins. Home-schooling parents that want to use fitness DVDs for physical education can find options for kids as young as 2 years old.

    Personal Interests

    • Some parents choose a home-school fitness program based upon the interests of the child. Children may opt to participate in private or city sports programs, such as soccer, baseball or tennis. Other children enjoy gymnastics, martial arts or dance. Some parents may choose to purchase a family membership at a local gym for use of the swimming pool, basketball courts and other equipment. Some gyms even offer fitness classes for children throughout the week, which could double as a physical education class.
