The Duke University Talent Identification Program provides a variety of opportunities for gifted and talented students. TIP offers a talent search for students in fourth, fifth and seventh grade, who score in the 95% percentile on standardized testing, or have a score of at least 125 on an IQ test. Students in fourth or fifth grade receive a chance to take the EXPLORE test, typically given in eight grade. The program also offers students in seventh grade a choice of taking either the ACT or SAT college entrance exam. TIP provides advanced learners opportunities to take part in special summer programs and camps, as well as school year courses and weekend conferences at Duke University.
Purdue University's Gifted Education Resource Institute provides three programs for gifted and talented learners. Students must have a high interest in the program topics and a desire to learn. The Institute recommends that students be enrolled in a gifted program at a school, have test scores at or above the 90th percentile and have an IQ of at least 120 for GERI programs. The Super Saturday courses allow students from age 4 to grade 8 to choose from a wide range of educational and hands on learning courses and is offered in the fall and spring semesters, from 9 a.m until noon. Super Summer is for talented students from pre-kindergarten to fourth grade and offers students a summer camp program focused on a variety of educational topics. Students attend morning or afternoon courses at the university, and are able to take both morning and afternoon sessions if they choose. Students in grades 5 though 12 attend the GERI Summer Residential Camp program, where they take part in challenging educational programs, as well as recreational programs and the opportunity to live in a college dorm for part of the summer.
The Young Scholars Program, funded by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, provides gifted students with financial need with scholarship support. Students apply for participation in the program in their seventh grade year, and receive scholarship funding for educational and enrichment programs such as summer courses and distance learning, as well as assistance in finding an appropriate schooling environment for each scholar. Applicants for the program must have high academic achievement, financial need, a desire and drive to learn, public service experience and appreciation for the arts. The program enrolls approximately 50 students each year.
