Low Income Alternative Schools in Vancouver, Washington

According to Internet Special Education Resources, alternative schools have been around for several decades in order to "meet the needs of children and adolescents who cannot learn effectively in a traditional school environment (i.e., conventional public or private schools) due to behavioral issues, certain medical conditions, learning challenges or psychological issues." Vancouver, Washington has several alternative schools which not only offer a unique learning environment or curriculum but are also available to low-income students through the Evergreen Public School District.
  1. iQ Academy

    • Low-income Vancouver families can send their children to iQ Academy, an accredited online alternative school for student in grades six through twelve. The school is tuition-free and, according to its website, iQ Academy's mission is "to provide students the opportunity to develop the skills necessary for success in the 21st century, through technology and an independent learning environment." Students can enroll either part time or full time, and full-time students can borrow a laptop. Students must follow the pace of their courses, but they will guide themselves through the required materials, assignment and examinations. Students can choose from a variety of electives such as web design and Spanish as well as Advanced Placement (AP) and college-preparatory classes.

    Clark County Skills Center

    • Clark County Skills Center is an alternative school available to students in Vancouver, Washington. As a part of the Evergreen Public Schools system, low-income students are able to attend the Clark County Skill Center for free. The school, according to its website, has the purpose of getting students ready for the work force and offers technical career training for students. The school is open to high school juniors and seniors and offers a wide variety of technical training programs, in such areas as Applied Medical Sciences, Automotive Technology, Construction Technology, Financial Customer Services, Cosmetology, and Travel and Hotel Management.

    Home Choice Academy

    • Home Choice Academy is an alternative school for Vancouver students and is a part of the Evergreen Public Schools system and thus available at no cost to its students. The school is designed to supplement home school instruction. The school is for children in Kindergarten through eighth grade, and instruction is divided into 5 classes which meet a couple times a week for a few hours. Curriculum is based on Washington State K-8 Mathematic Standards, and reading and writing Washington State Grade Level Expectations.

    Vancouver Early Childhood Center

    • The Vancouver Early Childhood Center is an alternative school offering education and care for preschool students with "development delays," according to Vancouver Public Schools website. As part of the Evergreen School District, low-income families can attend the school for free. There are also community screenings free of charge to help determine whether children have developmental delays. Students will have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) written for them.
