The Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program provides free services and support to eligible families of the Long Beach community. Two full days of attendance is required of children each week and the curriculum teaches children motor skills, language, mathematics and social skills. OBSD also offers a developmental preschool program, serving students with developmental delays and who are in need of assistance in cognitive and physical areas, as well as with communication. Parents are offered important tools for preparing their children for school in the READY! For Kindergarten seminar offered by the school district, which touches on language and reading, math and reasoning plus social skills. Another program, Thrive By Five, is a home-visitation program available to Long Beach families designed to prepare children with literacy and communication skills before entering kindergarten.
Long Beach Elementary School educates students from kindergarten through sixth grade. The school has an on-site library which participates in a number of programs including The Scholastic Fair and Read Across America. To achieve literacy success at Long Beach Elementary, all students are tested on their oral reading fluency three times per year. Those students who fall in the 25th to 49th percentile of oral reading fluency are given assistance and attend the Read Naturally lab three times a week. In regards to teaching math at the school, teachers are regularly given data about their students' progress and evaluate and adjust their instruction according to that data. The Highly Capable Program is also offered at the school, which is designed for students gifted with intellectual or creative abilities. Music is taught at the school, with recorder and ukulele classes also offered for students.
Ilwaco Middle/High School -- "Home of the Fishermen" -- serves students from the Long Beach community and is part of the Ocean Beach School District. The school is just a few miles from Long Beach and enrolls students from seventh to 12th grade, with an enrollment of just over 350 students. The school offers nine Advanced Placement courses, an AVID curriculum that promotes success in college, and the GEAR UP program, which encourages students with college options. In addition to these programs, Ilwaco Industries, a career and technical club at the school, gives students the opportunity to learn merchandising and technical skills in print media, vinyl cutting, embroidery and silkscreening. The students involved in the club learn and sell custom products for clients of the company.
Located on the Columbia River in adjacent Astoria, Ore., St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic School is the nearest private school, just under 20 miles from Long Beach. The school's mission is to be a "Christ-filled learning community fostering love, integrity and academic excellence." St. Mary, Star of the Sea enrolls students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The school offers a technology lab and an on-site reading specialist, and follows Catholic traditions through active prayer and worship services. Parent Club meetings are held regularly and all parents are invited to attend.
