The Lafayette Parish Alternative Program for Students, operated by the Lafayette Public School System, offers an educational alternative for students who have been expelled from school. Students must be in grades 6 to 12 and currently enrolled in a Lafayette Parish school to be eligible. The student must apply to the program within 5 school days of the expulsion hearing that resulted in removal from the current school. Prospective students participate in an interview and orientation process prior to admission. The program accepts students who have been expelled for violent behavior, drug possession and possession of a weapon. The program emphasizes accountability and responsibility by including physical skills training and instruction in social skills.

The public schools also operate the Continuing Academic Program for Students (CAPS). Admission requirements are similar to those for the Alternative Program, but this program accepts students from grades 4 to 12. Students must follow a dress code and wear a uniform. The school strives to meet students' educational needs while effecting "behavior change through the process of re-thinking, re-evaluating and re-directing student's mindsets."
