Central Oregon Alternative Schools

Alternative schools serve students who have a difficult time being successful in a traditional learning environment. Often aimed at teaching youth who are at risk of dropping out, alternative education programs usually employ hands-on experience in their teaching. Many of Central Oregon's alternative schools use the outdoors as part of their program, as there is a wealth of natural beauty in the area. Because there are not many large cities in Central Oregon, most alternative schools in the area are located in Bend.
  1. Rimrock Expeditionary Alternative Learning Middle School (REALMS)

    • REALMS is a public charter middle school that serves students in grades 6 to 8. Part of the Bend LaPine School District, REALMS was the first Oregon charter school to open east of the Cascades. Having only 90 students means at REALMS "students know their peers and teachers well, and are able to establish positive relationships through frequent contact and cooperation," according to the school website. The REALMS mission is to teach students to "become stewards of the human and natural world around us" by providing educational activities and explorations in and out of the classroom.

    • ONGYCP is an alternative, military-modeled high school located in Bend. Students attending ONGYCP can earn their high school diplomas or GED. Many students attending the school were at risk of dropping out. The school approaches these students with a "tough love" attitude that, according to the National Guard, instills values and training. Students live on campus for the first five months of their training and are then moved into the community for another 12 months.
