Arizona Alternative Schools

An alternative school offers a curriculum that is different from that of traditional schools. The term is used to describe many different types of schools and includes those that offer support to students who are not finding success with traditional school education and are in danger of failing academically. There are a few alternative schools in Arizona that offer diverse curriculums, close teacher-student relationships and where students have the opportunity to learn new skills and participate both in the school activities and in the community.

    • Superstition High School is an alternative school located in Mesa, Arizona, that offers academic courses endorsed by Mesa Public Schools. It provides students with an opportunity to earn a high school diploma. The classes are small, and the environment is friendly and welcoming, encouraging students to set goals and do their best to achieve them. The school teaches students to be responsible and to understand the need for an education. Grade levels are from seven to 12, and the courses offered are the Mesa Public Schools core curriculum. Students are placed according to the grade level class for their academic courses. Superstition High is part of the Mesa High Schools system, which is accredited through North Central Accreditation.

    Mountain Shadows Education Center

    • The Mountain Shadows Education Center is an alternative education center that comes under the Apache Junction Unified School District. It provides education to more than 5,000 students in a 217-square-mile radius that includes Gold Canyon, Peralta, Trail Queen Valley and various areas of the Superstition Mountain foothills, all located in Pinal County. It was formed in 1952 and offers a K-12 education with a variety of educational programs. The school's innovative approach includes goals to help students succeed academically, physically and emotionally. Students receive individualized attention and support, and classes are small enough in order to make this possible. According to AJUSD, its technology model is recognized as one of the best in the country and offers students an opportunity to integrate modern technology into the curriculum as an instructional tool.

    Ombudsman Educational Services

    • Ombudsman Educational Services operates schools that offer alternative education to middle and secondary school students who are not succeeding in the traditional school system. Students are given an opportunity to earn a high school diploma through personalized attention in a small learning community. The schedule is flexible, enabling the student to maintain employment and family responsibilities. Instructors are specialists in helping students make responsible decisions regarding their educational goals. There are six Charter School Centers in Phoenix and three in Tucson.

    Canyon Valley School

    • Located in Mesa, Canyon Valley School offers programs for high school and junior high students, and the school provides an environment that is conducive to learning and achieving academic success. The programs include three courses designed to be completed every nine weeks. Academic expectations are high, and the educational sessions offer a flexible schedule. There is an on-site counselor offering help for students on individual and career levels.
