Alternative Schools in Colorado

Parents decide to send their children to alternative schools for several reasons: because they must work, have fallen behind in high school or have struggled in a traditional setting. Parents may prefer that their children attend schools that take a different approach from that typically offered by mainstream schools. Some alternative schools are public, open to all who live within the district boundaries. Other schools are private, with selective admissions. High school students in Colorado also have the option of enrolling in an online school.
  1. Eagle Rock High School

    • This private, full-scholarship, nonprofit school is located in the mountain community of Estes Park. The school is small and admission is selective. While the school primarily serves students who have run out of other ways to graduate from high school, Eagle Rock doesn't accept students with severe mental health issues or physical disabilities that require constant monitoring. Students are not admitted as freshman, sophomores, juniors or seniors. They graduate when they demonstrate a mastery of the school's requirements. Some classes aren't graded; students complete credits through coursework, class participation and service projects off campus. Each student has an individualized learning plan.

    G.O.A.L. Academy

    • The Guided Online Academic Learning (G.O.A.L.) Academy is open to all Colorado students, offering an accredited high school diploma through classes offered solely over the Internet. The school accommodates many students with special needs; each student receives an individualized graduation plan and is allowed to work at her own pace. The school also offers advanced courses for college-bound students. Most classes are offered over the Internet and students can access lessons 24 hours a day, but students can receive one-on-one tutoring and guidance if needed.

    Red Canyon High School

    • Red Canyon High School is located in Eagle, Colorado and is part of the Eagle County School District. Students must live within the district's boundaries to attend. The school serves a variety of students who have struggled in traditional high school settings. Some have medical problems that prevent them from attending a traditional school schedule. Others are teen parents or must work too many hours to attend a typical high school. The school tries to accommodate work schedules and child care needs to help students behind on credits earn a high school diploma.
