  1. North Heights Alternative School

    • North Heights Alternative School (NHAS) is a school for at-risk high school students and those with a history of academic failure or behavioral trouble. NHAS works to improve the academic potential of students by meeting their special social, emotional and learning needs. NHAS prepares students for success beyond high school, whether they pursue college, vocational training or jobs. The school enrolls approximately 1200 students each school year from the four traditional high schools in Amarillo.

    Richard Milburn Academy

    • Richard Milburn Academy (RMA) is part of a national chain of alternative education schools. The school helps students with special learning needs to improve their academic performance and become more self-confident in the school environment. RMA enrolls students with learning disabilities and students that have failed academically because of problems related to behavior or drug and alcohol abuse. The school staff is trained to approach students with a caring attitude and to work to help them overcome emotional, social and intellectual barriers to success. The school offers small class sizes and state-standardized exam preparation. The school also offers an accelerated-degree program and vocational education courses to prepare those students who plan to enter the work force immediately following graduation.

    Amarillo Area Center for Advanced Learning

    • Amarillo Area Center for Advanced Learning (AACAL) accepts students who are enrolled in high school in the Amarillo Independent School District. The school offers students the opportunity to study programs not available at traditional public schools. The five special programs offered are animal science technology, automotive technology, computer science technology, engineering and health science technology. These programs prepare students for success in careers post-high school. Students who attend AACAL during the day are allowed to participate in athletics and extracurricular activities at their home public school.

    Amarillo Montessori Academy

    • Amarillo Montessori Academy (AMA) enrolls infants, toddlers and children under the age of six. The school is a certified Montessori school, offering students an alternative education to prepare them to succeed in the private or public school setting. AMA encourages students to cultivate their talents and interests by allowing them to have an active role in their daily curriculum. Students are encouraged to develop artistic and musical inclinations, which are valued as integral disciplines in a child's education.
