Locate the information you need to cite.
Locate name of the author or authors and year of publication for the material cited. If you are citing a direct quote, you will need the page number.
Type an open parenthesis before the period of the last sentence of the information to be cited. For example, "The tests results were inconclusive (."
Type the last name of the author or the name of the organization that published the work, such as a university, research institute, corporation or nonprofit organization.
For example, "The test results were inconclusive (Warren." For two authors, include both last names in the order they appear on the original publication separated by the "&" symbol. For three or more authors, use the first author's last name and the phrase, "et. al".
For organizations with abbreviated names like the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), use the full name in the first citation and the abbreviation in all subsequent citations.
Place a comma after the author. For example, "The tests results were inconclusive" (Warren,
Type the year of the publication. For example, "The tests results were inconclusive" (Warren, 2005.) If the citation is for a direct quote proceed to the next step. If the citation is not for a direct quote, go to Step 8.
Place a comma after the year, and type "p." and then the page number. For example, "The tests results were inconclusive" (Warren, 2005, p. 58.
Type a closed parenthesis. The completed citation without a page number should look like, "The tests results were inconclusive" (Warren, 2005). With a page number the citation should look like, "The tests results were inconclusive" (Warren, 2005, p.58).
